Australian weightlifter Tia-Clair Toomey is officially the second-fittest woman in the world – and it’s not good enough for her.

Toomey last week finished second in the  CrossFit Games, a gruelling competition of 15 events in five days. And it devastated her.

“As much as it was an honour to be back on that podium again this year and to be placed second, I was truly gutted and devastated with the end result purely because I really wanted that gold medal,” she said.

Toomey, who also finished second in the CrossFit Games last year, said the disappointment would motivate her when she makes her Olympic debut in Rio as a weightlifter in the 58kg division.

“Coming into the Olympics, this might have given me a lot of drive and I guess a little bit of anger in myself to just lift as much as I can and do the best that I can for my country,” she said.

“Having the experience of competing at the CrossFit Games … would definitely help prepare for the Olympics, and be comfortable with having a large crowd in front of me.”

Toomey said she was an Olympian only because of CrossFit, which she started three years ago.

“When I first started CrossFit in 2013, weightlifting was a very big weakness of mine,” she said.

“If it wasn’t for CrossFit, I wouldn’t be here today … doing both those sports definitely complement each other.”

Tia placed 14th at the Rio Olympics on Aug 8th in the 58kg weight class. Toomey’s Rio total of 189 kg was 5 kg off her personal best.  As it stands, Toomey has clean-and-jerked 111 kg—better than all but one other 58-kg lifter in the nation.
